I’m thinking about becoming a Christian. Tell me, what is a Christian and how do I become one?

What is a Christian?

Christians are people who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to Earth to show us what God is really like. While on Earth he lived a perfect life and helped many people. Yet he was killed for his efforts. But to everyone’s astonishment, he rose from the dead after three days – as he said he would. The historical evidence for the Resurrection of Christ is very good indeed, for those who examine it with an open mind.

The Bible provides a reliable account of these events and tells us why Jesus Christ came among us for a while. Knowing that all humans are chronically selfish, he made it possible for anyone who believes in him to not only have a good relationship with God, but to receive power to overcome personal problems and live an unselfish, fulfilled life. True Christians are life-long followers of Jesus Christ who grow in their faith in the context of a life-giving local church. God expects them to tell others of his power to change lives for good.

How do I become a Christian?

To become a Christian you must come to God with a humble attitude because you must first admit that you have done many wrong things. Don’t make excuses for these but simply tell God that you are a guilty sinner; that you’re really sorry and want to make a new start. When you talk to God, speak naturally, as you would to a friend. You don’t need a funny voice to communicate effectively with God.

Then declare your full confidence in Jesus Christ to change your life. Tell Jesus that you are willing to become a life-long follower of his and will do anything he asks of you. This can be scary, but there is nothing to fear because Jesus is very kind and understanding. You will need a lot of help from him, so invite his Spirit to live in you. The Christian life then becomes exciting as the Spirit of Christ literally lives his life through you as you continue to trust him and read the Bible regularly. And you must also find a life giving local church to join because you will need help from other Christians to complete the journey you have begun. Look for churches that display 'Alpha' notices. If a church offers regular courses, it could be the right church for you.

Pray the following prayer. Get focussed and pray with passion – as if your life and destiny depended on it (because it does!).

“Lord Jesus Christ, I’m sorry for the many wrong things I have done in my life (name the sins that trouble your conscience most). Please forgive me. I now turn away from sin and trust you for a fresh start in my life. With your help I believe I can change. I will follow you for the rest of my life and do what you ask of me. I ask you to fill me with your Spirit and I trust you to live your transforming life through me every day. Lead me to a life giving church so I can get help and encouragement from other Christians. Thank you Lord Jesus.”

Now tell someone what you have done. As you tell others of your decision, it becomes a reality for you. The first person you tell should be someone you think will be pleased to hear of your decision. If you are also interested in coming to a service at South City Christian Centre, but would first like to get some idea of what we do, check the questions about our church section.
