Conclusion

The Bible is the inspired, authoritative Word of God.

Consider this option put forward by a very bright chap by the name of Blaise Pascal a long time ago. It seems that he was a ‘betting man’ and encouraged people to take a wager or ‘bet’ on their lives. That is, to ‘bet’ that God exists and to live accordingly, rather than to ‘bet’ that he doesn’t exist and live according to that. If you bet that God exists and you are right, you win everything and get to live a meaningful and purposeful life. If you bet that God exists and you are wrong, you have not lost much.

However, if you bet that God does not exist, and you are right you have gained little. The life of an unbeliever is no better than the life of a believer. Often it is much worse. But if you bet that God does not exist and you are wrong, then, as Jesus taught, you will face eternal emotional suffering in hell.

It makes a lot of sense, then, to bet your life and eternal destiny on the belief that God does exist, and to follow him. There is everything to gain, and everything to lose if you don’t.

“He is no fool, who gives up what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose” (Jim Elliot).

These arguments are pretty good and may convince some, but they are just brief introductions to big issues. You may not yet be convinced and may want to explore these issues further. Follow the links below for further information:

The moment you wake up each morning, all your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists in shoving it all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other, larger, stronger, quieter life coming flowing in.

C.S. Lewis
